It’s finally here, one of the most anticipated Mazdas in the global lineup is gracing our shores. The Mazda CX-60 is a generational leap compared to what came before. This is a monumental model for the brand as it not only brings its M Hybrid boost to a crossover for the first time, but it’s also the first Mazda crossover to feature a rear-wheel-drive layout and truly differentiate it from the mainstream.
The CX-60 is an all-new platform from Mazda, and it’s different from other models like the CX-5, the CX-8, and the CX-9. All of those other models have a unibody chassis, but their bones are made to take the layout of a transversely-oriented engine. The CX-60 turns the engine 90 degrees for a longitudinal layout, for rear-wheel drive. It also introduces the concept of “Japanese Premium” in the Philippines, which is a more premium, more amazing, and more engaging driving experience for its users.
“The Mazda CX–60 is more than an exciting new SUV; it’s the evolution of Mazda Premium—a high-quality concentration of design, driving dynamics, technology, and comfort. It offers unmatched distinction in every way.”

Japanese Premium

Mazda wants to go into a more premium category, and there is a business necessity to do so for some time now. Mazda announced its intent to get into the more premium segment, and it’s not doing this without any data. In the last 10 years, the brand’s average product price has been growing, giving Mazda a linear progression over time. There is now a newfound confidence to introduce some of the better models that are available in other markets, and the CX-60 is the result of Mazda’s belief in the Filipinos’ love for driving.

Japanese premium is the term that defines the CX-60, and in layman’s terms, it’s a noticeable step up from the already premium models in Mazda’s stable. In essence, it’s a step up from a CX-5 and Mazda’s answer to the growing demand for premium luxury crossovers. The CX-60 is not only the first front-rear engine and drive wheel layout in a Mazda crossover, it’s also one of Mazda Philippines’ first breakthrough models to enter a higher echelon in the market.
Exterior

As usual, it’s gorgeous all over. Mazda’s ability to design cars that play with the light while evoking loads of elegance is rather unmatched in the industry. The CX-60 features nothing but the brand’s best stuff, from its LED headlights with adaptive sweeping functions, and also its next-generation Evolved Kodo Design language. The long hood and shapely body give it ideal proportions. The powerful grille with the LED headlights flanking it gives a sense of strength and elegance and it ties in with the overall design of the car—“Noble Toughness”

Other details include 20-inch aluminum-alloy wheels with 235/50/R20 tires, a panoramic sunroof, and a hands-free power tailgate with height adjustment memory. There are a few key differences between each of the variants presented in the lineup. The gasoline variant has diamond-cut alloy wheels, a gloss black bar-type grille, bright chrome on the front signature wing, fender garnish, side window molding, and exhaust finishers.
On the other hand, the diesel variant has a dignified look with its black metallic alloy wheels, gloss black honeycomb grille, and side view mirrors, black chrome on the front signature wing, fender garnish, exhaust finishers, and finally, matte black window molding.
Mazda also expands on its premium color options with Rhodium White Premium joining Soul Red Crystal and Machine Gray. This color is the latest in the Takuminuri color selection and it is the purest white that has been developed by Mazda. The colors accentuate the shadows on the surface of the vehicle, which complements the paint’s inherent metallic texture and finish.
Interior

On the inside, the cabin of the CX-60 features an elevated standard over the other Mazda vehicles. The cockpit offers an unparalleled and ergonomic driving experience that is ideal for those that love to drive. Everything is carefully considered, but convenience was not left out as the model still comes with 570 liters of cargo space that opens up bigger with a 40:20:40 split-fold rear seat giving it ample space to expand.

Up front, you get a 12.3-inch fully-digital driver display which is paired with a twin 12.3-inch infotainment display. There is also a 10.4-inch heads-up display that puts all the information that you need in your line of sight, offering you an unimpeded view of the road and of your driving information at the same time. The infotainment screen is also fully featured with a majority of the already-standard features in other Mazda vehicles making a return, like Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, paired with a 12-speaker Bose audio system, and then some. Mazda is bundling in the Driver Personalization System, a new innovation from the brand, with the CX-60, that makes it easy for drivers to find their ideal driving position. The driver’s data can be input into the infotainment system, and the car will calculate and detect the ideal driving position by tracking the driver’s eyes, and it will adjust from there.

As for the interior materials, Black Nappa Leather, with silver accents grace the gasoline variant of the CX-60, while the diesel gets Tan Nappa Leather seats with quilted Leganu suede inserts. In addition to being premium, the CX-60 also features a 10-way power adjustable driver’s seat.

In addition to tech features, safety enhancements include the range of i-Activsense driver assistance systems that are designed to deliver safety for the driver, other road users, and even pedestrians. In the package, we’re getting the See-Through View—Mazda’s enhanced 360-degree camera technology, Hill Descent Contro (HDC), Blind Spot Monitoring with Vehicle Exit Warning, Rear Cross Traffic Alert, Rear Cross Brake Support, and also Mazda’s full suite of autonomous driving assists like Radar Cruise Control, Front Smart Brake Support with Forward Obstruction Warning, Rear Smart Brake Support, Lane Departure Warning with Lane Keep Assist, Front Cross Traffic Alert, Driver Monitoring System, and Driver Attention Alert.
Engine and Transmission
This is Mazda’s biggest and most powerful production engine so far, and it also combines mild hybrid technologies and weaves it into some of the best gasoline and diesel motors in the market. Two engine options will comprise the lineup and be made available for the CX-60, a 3.3-liter inline-six HEV e-Skyactiv-G engine that produces 280 hp and 450 Nm of torque, and a 3.3-liter inline-six HEV e-Skyactiv-D engine that produces 250 hp and 550 Nm of torque. The gasoline powertrain brings the crossover from 0 to 100 km/h in just 6.9 seconds, while the mill in the diesel variant has a reported 0 to 100 km/h time of 7.3 seconds.
Paired with the SKYACTIV-DRIVE Eight-Speed Automatic transmission, which no longer uses a torque converter is smooth and responsive. It offers a wider gear range and features a new multi-plate system that results in clean and rhythmic gear changes while also enabling the M Hybrid Boost electric motor.
The powertrain drives all four wheels on the car, but it is rear-biased. The i-ACTIV All-Wheel Drive system is supported by the Mi-Drive Select functions which include four different drive modes: Normal, Sport, Off-Road, and Towing.
Price
As Mazda’s current foray into newer and newer heights in the market, the new CX-60 will be remembered as the model that pushed the boundaries of the compact crossover segment, while challenging the more premium market of crossovers.
