Looking at the Mazda MX-5 one wouldn’t notice that the fourth generation of the sporty convertible has been with us for a whopping eight years. That is unless you own one or you’ve been closely monitoring the life cycle of the MX-5. Regardless, even though the roadster is a little up there in terms of age, because of its looks and reputation for being a fun and exciting car, it makes sense that Mazda could get away with not mixing up the MX-5 formula too much.
However, even if the current generation is a beautiful thing to behold, eight years in production means the MX-5 is due for a new generation. In a recent report done by Top Gear Philippines, two motoring publications overseas say that the MX-5 will get a facelift. According to the Australian publication Drive, don’t expect the new model anytime soon as the fifth-gen MX-5 could be three years away. However, Best Car Web, a Japanese auto website, has reported that the current gen MX-5 might receive an update before the end of 2023.

According to Best Car, the upcoming facelift is expected to keep the MX-5 fighting for a span of three to four years. This is because the next-generation model, contrary to previous expectations, is projected to arrive in 2028. There are even speculations that the future iteration might adopt hybrid or electric power, adding a new dimension to its performance.

Sources from Japan suggest that the update will consist of a fresh set of bumpers and redesigned headlight clusters, incorporating new LED signatures, and fog light patterns. Additionally, enhancements are expected for the MX-5’s infotainment system, with the possibility of featuring the wider 8.8-inch ‘frameless’ display with Mazda Connect seen in the CX-30.
In terms of performance, the last time the MX-5 got an update, it received a bump in power from tweaks made to its 2.0-liter SkyActiv-G engine as well as additional suspension upgrades. With that in mind, the facelift for the MX-5 might be more than just cosmetic, however, with nothing to confirm that with, we’ll have to wait until Mazda come out with a statement.
