Toyota released a variant of the Yaris Cross specifically designed for Southeast Asian and “emerging markets” in May 2023. This version, intended for ASEAN countries, utilizes the Daihatsu New Global Architecture (DNGA) platform, distinguishing it from the Japan/European-spec Yaris. While it is expected to reach other countries, it remains uncertain whether it will be available in the Philippines.

Recently, exports of the small crossover have commenced, and there are hints that the Yaris Cross may eventually arrive in the Philippines. Cambodia, in particular, has become the first country to receive left-hand drive models of this subcompact crossover.

This development provides some insight into what the Philippine version might entail if the Yaris Cross does become available. Visually, it closely resembles the Indonesia-spec model, with the only noticeable difference being the placement of the wiper arms. The wheels, trims, and other design elements are identical to the right-hand drive model. Internally, the steering wheel placement and dashboard orientation differ, although Toyota has made the effort to relocate the audio control buttons to the left of the touchscreen.

In terms of features, the left-hand drive model appears to incorporate most of the amenities found in the Indonesian version. Higher-end models include wireless charging, a power tailgate, and smart key accessibility. Additionally, it benefits from Toyota Safety Sense, offering adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist, and autonomous emergency braking.

The Cambodia-market Yaris Cross is only available with a single engine option—a familiar 1.5-liter mill used in the Avanza and Veloz. The power ratings remain unchanged, generating 106 hp and 138 Nm of torque. This engine is paired with a continuously variable transmission (CVT) featuring seven simulated gears.

Based on the available information, it seems likely that this model will be introduced in the Philippines. However, considering Toyota Motor Philippines’ emphasis on electrification, there is a possibility of a hybrid variant being offered for the local market. Ultimately, the decision to sell this model in the country rests with Toyota.
