When AMG made the initial announcement about jointly developing the SL and GT Coupe models, some devoted fans were quick to criticize Mercedes, claiming that the move would dilute the competitive edge of the Porsche 911 contender by transforming it into an SL model with a solid metal roof. However, it’s important to consider that this judgment was made prematurely, without the full reveal of the coupe model.
The official introduction of the coupe has only just occurred, and thus, a fair assessment of whether the new GT Coupe has sacrificed any of its precision will necessitate waiting for initial reviews and real-world experiences.
Now, let’s welcome the 2024 iteration of the Mercedes-AMG GT Coupe. This high-performance vehicle is undergoing a transformation into a more utilitarian 2+2 sports car, featuring the adaptable 4Matic+ all-wheel drive system. Initially, it will be available exclusively in the “63” and “55” variants, both equipped with robust V8 engines. Whether the four-cylinder engine with 375 hp from the SL 43 will be integrated into the GT Coupe lineup later in its lifecycle remains uncertain.

However, it’s important to consider that this judgment was made prematurely, without the full reveal of the coupe model.

At the summit of the lineup, the AMG GT 63 Coupe boasts an impressive power output of 577 horsepower and a peak torque of 800 Nm, derived from its twin-turbo 4.0-liter V8 engine. This output mirrors that of the SL 63. Accelerating from 0 to 100 km/h takes a mere 3.1 seconds, which is 0.4 seconds quicker than the Roadster version. Opting for the AMG GT 55 Coupe grants you 469 horsepower and 570 Nm of torque, once again aligning with its SL counterpart. This slightly less powerful version completes the 0 to 100 km/h sprint in 3.8 seconds, an exact match for the roadster.
When pushed to its limits, the more potent of the two coupes can achieve a top speed of 315 km/h, whereas the base variant reaches a respectable 295 km/h. Both the “63” and “55” iterations come with an all-wheel drive and nine-speed automatic transmission, featuring a wet start-off clutch that replaces the conventional torque converter. The V8 engine, complemented by its standard active engine mounts, can efficiently distribute power between the front and rear axles or channel it exclusively to the rear axle.

These dynamic counterparts are furnished with an electronically controlled limited-slip differential, rear-wheel steering, and composite brake discs measuring 390 mm at the front. AMG has plans to introduce ceramic brakes featuring larger 420 mm discs for the front axle later in 2024. Both versions are equipped with a sports suspension system enhanced by semi-active, hydraulic roll stabilization that incorporates adaptive shock absorbers. Additionally, a front lift system capable of elevating the front end by 30 mm contributes to the vehicle’s practicality.
There is no word yet on a Philippine launch, but it is of note that the past generation AMG GT was officially available locally, with the new SL now available in dealerships, so it is highly possible that this next-generation AMG GT will reach our shores.
