Toyota is celebrating 40 years since the original Corolla AE86 hit the market. The way the Japanese automaker is celebrating though, is by giving tribute to the drift mobile by providing some upgrades to its modern-day iteration, the GR86.
Offered with a choice of either a manual or an automatic transmission, this blast to the past model is produced in limited quantities, with only 200 units available. It comes with a range of enhancements both inside and out. This unique variant is built upon the JDM-spec RZ trim and can be had in either classic white or bold red, featuring black stripes along the sides. If the photos are any indication, the unique look is a reference to the Initial D manga and anime TV series, an iconic piece of media that boosted the original Trueno AE86 into stardom.

The special edition sports 18-inch wheels painted in a sleek dark gray metallic coating and comes fitted with 215/40-sized tires. Aside from the black side stripes, Toyota has applied a striking black finish to the side mirror caps and the prominent trunk lid spoiler, creating a captivating contrast with the car’s body paint. Inside the vehicle, a striking black and red color scheme prevails, enhanced by the presence of a “Since 1983 40th” logo adorning the door cards, letting you know from the outset that this car is a limited-run version.
If you think the 40th Anniversary GR86’s upgrades are only skin-deep though, think again. Toyota has fitted a fresh set of Sachs dampers, designed to provide both comfort and stability and a new set of sizable ventilated Brembo brake discs, known for delivering consistent braking performance even in challenging conditions. Though the GR86 is built to perform sideways for hours, these upgrades will have you sliding with confidence for longer.
Toyota Japan has priced the manual gearbox-equipped version at ¥3,822,000 JPY and the automatic variant at ¥3,920,000 JPY. Converted to Philippine pesos, this limited-run GR86 is priced at around P1,463,395, and P1,502,347 respectively, do note of course, that this is before taxes and other fees are applied. In addition, because Toyota foresees that demand will surpass supply, Toyota intends to conduct a lottery to determine the fortunate individuals who will have the opportunity to purchase the vehicle.
