Shortly after unveiling the refreshed ND3 MX-5 Miata, Mazda is gearing up to reveal a new concept car closely linked to its roadster lineage. The announcement came on Tuesday, with Mazda proclaiming that their display at the 2023 Japanese Mobility Show will be dedicated entirely to the MX-5, showcasing both the latest iterations and the classics, in addition to a “fresh concept car designed to embody the theme of the exhibit.”
Judging from the teaser image that was released, this concept seems to have ties to a scissor-door coupe concept Mazda showcased the previous year, with strikingly similar rear lights. This earlier concept was introduced as the “Vision Study Model” during a presentation outlining Mazda’s electrification roadmap.
It’s expected that the current ND Miata will remain in production for a few more years, an unusually lengthy lifespan for a contemporary car, though not unprecedented for the enduring Miata. The third-generation NC was manufactured for a solid decade, and the ND hasn’t quite reached that milestone.

Mazda has confirmed that the next-generation Miata will incorporate some form of electrification, hinting at a likely hybrid configuration. The automaker has set a goal for 25 percent of its vehicle lineup to be fully electric by 2030, with the remaining models featuring some degree of electric technology. For now, all we’re getting is a teaser image of the actual concept and an announcement image with a die-cast MX-5 in the image. We’ll just have to wait and see what Mazda has planned, and what interesting ideas it has for the newest concept.
In any case, Mazda remains committed to preserving the MX-5 Miata’s legacy, even as the industry shifts towards electric vehicles. A European Mazda executive affirmed last year that the sports car will “continue to exist forever.” This assurance is certainly welcome news for Miata enthusiasts worldwide, who can’t fathom a world without the iconic roadster.
