Back in August, the Mitsubishi Xforce was launched to the world at the 2023 Gaikindo Indonesia International Auto Show, becoming the latest crossover in Mitsubishi’s lineup. Now, there’s news that Mitsubishi is prepping to launch its next crossover in 2024, however, it won’t be a solo project by Mitsubishi as it will be based on the Renault Scenic.
Sharing tech and vehicles is not new to Mitsubishi and Renault since they are partners in an alliance that also includes Nissan. The main goal behind this alliance is to cut down on production costs which is why you’ll find some cars built by the trio share parts with each other. An example of this partnership would be the transformation of the Renault Clio into the Mitsubishi Colt, and the adaptation of the Mitsubishi Xpander, featuring distinct front fascia and interior modifications, to emerge as the Nissan Livina.

Last month, Renault CEO Luca de Meo unveiled intentions to produce a new small electric SUV for Mitsubishi at Renault’s Douai factory in France, a crossover that he says is “for the world”. At the time, this announcement lacked specifics regarding the extent of resemblance between the Mitsubishi model and its Renault counterpart, except for the shared foundation—the AmpR Medium electric car platform collaboratively developed by Renault, Nissan, and Mitsubishi.

The Scenic, in its most basic trim, delivers 170 hp and 280 Nm of torque, while the premium variant has 220 hp and 300 Nm of torque. The base model is estimated to cover around 420 km on a single charge, whereas the higher-powered version, equipped with larger battery packs, can achieve a range of up to 610 km. If the Mitsubishi crossover will be a simple redesign like the Colt, then we should expect similar performance figures and range.
Now, Although Renault’s CEO said that this crossover is destined for the “world”, plans to export this EV crossover outside of Europe have not been mentioned yet, for now though, let’s take their word for it. According to Mitsubishi, the upcoming electric crossover is slated for release in the first quarter of 2024.
