The Mazda CX-5 crossover is poised to receive a hybrid powertrain in its upcoming generation, allowing it to finally compete with electrified SUV offerings from Toyota, Honda, Nissan, and other manufacturers. Mazda made this announcement during a presentation on its financial results for the Japanese fiscal year ending March 31, 2024.
Details remain sparse though, with Mazda only confirming the use of a “Mazda-developed hybrid engine.” The extent of in-house development for this powertrain is still unknown. Furthermore, the Japanese automaker did not specify whether this would be a conventional hybrid or a plug-in hybrid.

The word “in-house” is important because Mazda has leveraged Toyota’s hybrid technology in some of its models; for instance, the CX-50 in China incorporates the Toyota RAV4’s electrified components.

The word “in-house” is important because Mazda has leveraged Toyota’s hybrid technology in some of its models; for instance, the CX-50 in China incorporates the Toyota RAV4’s electrified components.
Speaking of the CX-50, Mazda also says in its document that the hybrid CX-50 will make its way to other countries in the second half of 2024. Now that we know the CX-5 will live on to another generation, this will mean that the CX-5 and CX-50 will likely co-exist in some markets.
Right now, the CX-5 is offered in the Philippines with three variants and three powertrains. The first is a 2.0-liter naturally-aspirated four-cylinder gasoline engine that puts out 153 hp and 200 Nm of torque, followed by a 2.5-liter naturally-aspirated four-cylinder gasoline engine pumping out 187 hp and 252 Nm of torque. Sitting at the top of the range is a turbocharged 2.5-liter four-cylinder gasoline engine making the most power with 250 hp and 434 Nm of torque.
Again, with Mazda not providing much in the way of details, we do not know if these engines will make their way to the next generation or if Mazda will develop an entirely new engine alongside its hybrid system.
