While the entire car industry around the world, including popular ones like Mercedes-Benz and Toyota, is racing to perfect high technology with promises of vehicles capable of traveling over 1000 km per charge, SAIC is preparing to make this advanced technology commercially available. The first vehicle to benefit from this innovation will be the MG S5 model, which will launch later this year, around November, with traditional battery technology but will add more advanced applications. The battery tech, promising a longer lifespan of up to 45,000 cycles, will initially feature in higher-end models, competing against current NCM chemistry batteries.

Speaking on China’s future in battery technology, Xu Yanhua of the China Automotive Power Battery Industry Innovation Alliance suggests that high-energy-density liquid batteries and lithium iron phosphate batteries will remain predominant until 2030, as reported by Autohome. For its initial rollout, the MG S5 will use well-established lithium iron phosphate batteries, share its dimensions with the MG 4, and come equipped with a 125 kW motor positioned at the rear. It tips the scales at 1615 to 1740 kg, and SAIC is hinting that its launch could be the start of something big among electric vehicles.
