Picture this: you’re on the expressway, trying to make up time by overtaking the car in front of you. However, there’s another car in the overtaking lane, moving at the same speed as the one ahead. It’s a common yet undeniably frustrating situation on expressways not only here in the Philippines, but also other countries.
In addition, lane hogs are not only irritating to encounter, but they’re also a major road hazard. Pile-ups on the highways and expressways occur mainly because slow drivers in the left lane match the pace with cars to their right. These result in nasty rear-end collisions that can cause a chain reaction with other overtaking vehicles that cannot stop in time.

Nissan recognizes this issue and is currently finding ways to prevent inattentive drivers from cruising in the overtaking lane with its ProPilot 2.1 driver-assist technology. The latest version of ProPilot now features a lane change alert prompting drivers to move right after completing an overtake. While it can’t automatically make the lane change for you if you’re unaware, Nissan hopes that this simple reminder to keep the overtaking lane clear will reduce the number of left-lane hogs.
The system is gradually being introduced across Nissan and Infiniti models, debuting with the 2025 Rogue and offering hands-free driving on approved sections of highway. In addition, Nissan has also said that this feature will make its way to the all-new 2025 Patrol and the QX80 from Infiniti. While hands-free driving is part of the system, lane changes will still require driver input.

The alert will function as long as ProPilot 2.1 is active, whether in hands-free mode or not. The effects of this system won’t be felt immediately as Nissan is the only automaker to introduce this kind of system.
