A recent Ford survey reveals a growing interest among Filipinos in electrified vehicles, with over 40% considering purchasing one in the next 12 months. The study sheds light on local preferences and barriers, as Ford gears up for an electric future featuring models like the Mustang Mach-E, Ranger Plug-In Hybrid, and E-Transit.
Filipino drivers are becoming more familiar with EVs and hybrids, often describing them as “fun to drive,” “sporty,” and “cool.” Notably, 49% of respondents have ridden in an electric vehicle, and 33% have driven one. Over 70% believe EV ownership in the Philippines is practical, signaling growing acceptance.
Cost savings on fuel emerged as the top benefit of EVs, though some remain concerned about long-term maintenance costs. Additionally, most respondents want EVs with longer driving ranges and reduced maintenance expenses. Demand for practical capabilities is high, with 85% prioritizing off-road features and towing capacity in their ideal EV.
For daily use, respondents are drawn to EVs for delivery services, ride-sharing, and commuting. Interestingly, over half said they’d be more likely to date someone who drives an EV, while 81% believe EVs leave a great first impression.
Infrastructure remains the biggest roadblock, with 39% citing inadequate charging stations as a concern. Nearly half of the respondents are unaware of charging facilities within 20 km of their homes. To address this, Filipinos prefer to see charging points at service stations, supermarkets, and parks.
Misconceptions also persist, with nearly half believing home EV charging costs as much as refueling a gasoline vehicle. These myths highlight the need for education to promote EV adoption.
