While other automakers are busy rolling out the latest and greatest of their hybrid and EV technology, Mazda has its foot planted and is busy trying to keep the internal combustion engine alive. In a recent press release, Mazda announced its “Lean Asset Strategy” to boost flexibility in its electrification plans, streamline production, and reduce R&D costs through strategic collaborations.
The more important part of that press release though, is the announcement of the new SkyActiv-Z engine, which will debut in a hybrid configuration in the next-generation CX-5 by late 2027.

The CX-5’s hybrid powertrain will include an inline four-cylinder engine with a 2.5-liter displacement. The engine, like the hybrid system accompanying it, will all be built in-house by Mazda. In addition, the engine is said to be built to comply with future Euro 7 regulations, as well as LEV IV and Tier 4 emissions standards in North America. Mazda even says the Skyactiv-Z is “close to the ultimate combustion.”
Mazda states that the new powertrain offers “even higher thermal efficiency and an overwhelmingly wider range” compared to its current Skyactiv-G and Skyactiv-X engines. This is achieved thanks to Mazda’s Spark Controlled Compression Ignition (SCCI). According to the company, it enables the engine to seamlessly switch between traditional spark ignition and compression ignition, using a spark to trigger each type of combustion in different ways. The result is that the engine can make the most energy out of the fuel. Pretty neat.
What’s neater though is according to Mazda, Insights gained from refining the combustion process will be applied to larger six-cylinder engines. Interestingly, the automaker also intends to leverage this expertise to enhance rotary engines.
