The LEAF is one of Nissan’s most well-known electric vehicles and has long stood as proof of the brand’s bold thinking. The third-generation model aims to do more than just attract EV fans. Nissan wanted to create a car that could truly compete with gas-powered vehicles. Richard Candler from Nissan shared that they wanted this new LEAF to be sleek and smart, but also practical for families. It’s designed to be something that’s both exciting and useful, with a focus on real-world needs.
On the outside, the all-new LEAF has a bold look that was shaped with aerodynamics in mind. Designers and engineers worked together to make sure it not only looked good but also helped save energy. The LEAF’s U.S. and Japan versions have a drag coefficient of 0.26, while the European version goes even lower at 0.25 thanks to unique wheels and mirror designs. Other parts like the flush door handles, active grille, smooth underbody, and rear liftback shape help improve airflow and efficiency. Program Design Director Nobutaka Tase explained that every detail, from the shape to the glass roof, was made with airflow and energy in mind. The glass roof even helped lower the height at certain parts of the car by 12mm, without affecting the space inside. Thanks to special dimming glass, there’s no need for blinds or shades, which helps keep the headroom roomy, especially in the back seat.
This panoramic roof uses electrochromic glass with an infrared-blocking layer that cuts down heat and light. At the push of a button, the roof’s tint can be adjusted so drivers and passengers stay comfortable all year. Inside the car, the LEAF uses Nissan’s CMF-EV platform, which includes a flat floor for a more open and spacious feel. Even with the updated shape and bold design, the car still keeps its practicality for everyday use.
