BYD’s 7-seater plug-in hybrid SUV is expected to offer long range and a roomy cabin

We’ve seen teasers before, but this one looks extra roomy. BYD’s hinting at a new plug-in hybrid SUV that’s bigger than its other models. Yes, it looks like BYD Philippines is preparing to launch what could be its most spacious plug-in hybrid SUV so far. The Tang DM-i, a seven-seater crossover, was recently teased on BYD’s official Facebook page, showing just enough of its sharp-looking front to get people talking. While no full specs were revealed yet, the post hints at a large and bold addition to BYD’s growing lineup of hybrid vehicles.

The Tang DM-i already appeared earlier on the Department of Energy’s PHEV list and was cleared by the Land Transportation Office for local release. Now, it seems that BYD, through local distributor ACMobility, is ready to bring it to showrooms. It’s expected to come with a 1.5-liter turbo engine paired with a 21.5 kWh battery pack. With electric motors powering the front wheels, this hybrid setup is said to deliver up to 268 hp and 315 Nm of torque. On a full charge, the Tang DM-i can cover up to 110 km on electric power alone, but when combined with its gas engine, the range goes up to 1,150 km.

Compared to the Sealion 6 DM-i, the Tang DM-i is slightly longer by 95 mm, which could give more room inside. Being a 7-seater, it may attract buyers looking for an electrified family car or a fuel-efficient alternative to diesel SUVs.

BYD has yet to announce the exact launch date, but since the teaser is already out, it may arrive in the coming weeks. No official pricing has been shared, but with the fully electric Tang priced at P3.321 million, the plug-in hybrid version might still fall within the P3 million range.

Once it launches, the Tang DM-i might be one of the few hybrid SUVs in the country with both long range and seven seats. It’s another sign that BYD wants to bring more hybrid picks to local drivers. Until then, feel free to browse the full BYD lineup on AutoDeal.com.ph from the comfort of your home.
