Remember the BMW 5-Series we spotted testing back in December 2022, just on the outskirts of Munich, Germany? Well, BMW has finally confirmed that the next-generation 5-Series is indeed coming. May 24, 2023 to be exact.
Now, the BMW 5-Series has been an institution for BMW for a long time now. Starting life back in 1972, we have spanned seven generations now, with the incoming generation being the eighth. Living off the success of the previous models, should BMW play their cards right, we could also expect this next-generation 5-Series to be a great profit-making seller as well.

Based on the initial preview images and our spy images, it appears that the upcoming executive sedan may have a more forceful and upward-sloping design. The front of the car has sharper angles, a wider grille, and of course, that signature boomerang line found on the rear doors, which gives it a more commanding look—a breath of fresh air from their recently polarizing designs with larger-than-life kidney grilles. Yes, we are talking about you, BMW X7, and BMW 4-Series.

BMW has not yet disclosed all of the details regarding the next-generation 5 Series. However, they have announced some information regarding the all-electric versions of the car. The electric-powered 5 Series will be known as the i5 and come in two variations. The first version, called the eDrive40, has a single electric motor that produces 335 horsepower and powers the rear wheels. The second model, known as the M60 xDrive, has a dual-motor setup that gives the car all-wheel drive and 590 horsepower. BMW plans to release range estimates at the time of the launch, but with these larger electric motors, we could probably expect ranges of 400 km and above on a single charge.
For those who prefer traditional fuel options, there will be petrol and diesel engines available, as well as plug-in hybrid options which could come perhaps a year later.
There is no official word yet on a full-fledged M5 model, but there have been reports of a beefed-up 5-Series spotted testing at the Nurburgring, with rumors of a hybrid system mated to BMW’s ever-reliable 4.4-liter V8 engine, which we expect will shatter the current figure of 617 hp.
Now that Mercedes has launched the all-new E-Class, and BMW’s next-generation 5-Series is just on the horizon. When are we expecting the new A6 then Audi?
