First, we got the N 74 Vision Concept. We caught a good look at Hyundai’s project at this year’s Seoul Mobility Show, and we bit hard on the nostalgic design that Hyundai has brought to the table. The N 74 Concept was modeled after the Pony, Hyundai’s first-ever concept car that was designed by Giorgetto Giugiaro.
Now, Hyundai has remade its 1974 concept car, the Pony, once more. Done in commemoration of the inaugural Hyundai Reunion in Lake Como, Italy, the rebuilt Pony Concept has been restored and recreated faithfully to the original and exacting specifications with original materials. It’s no secret that the N 74 and the Pony are related. The “74” in N 74 relates to the year that the Pony Concept was introduced.
“The Pony Coupe Concept reflects the company’s gratitude and dedication to the challenging spirits that people at Hyundai Motor had back in 1974. The rebirth of the Pony Coupe Concept is a meaningful milestone in the history of Hyundai Motor because it signifies not only our beginnings but also our commitment to the future with our new dreams.”

At the time, in 1974, The Pony was considered a high-tech concept—ahead of its time, if you will. The concept served as the inspiration for Hyundai when it drew up the N 74 Vision Concept which was showcased earlier this year. The hydrogen-electric development concept vehicle was also displayed next to the vehicle which we consider to be the experimental IONIQ 6 N. After the IONIQ 5 N was announced, the model prompted some debate about the future of electric performance cars, a boundary that Hyundai will continue to push the more it gets into the annals of history with its electric models.
Minimalism was a key factor that made the Pony Concept remake a stunning piece in photos, and we can only imagine how great this would look in person. The boxy yet flowing lines of the coupe give it a retro-modern aesthetic, and its interior also reflects the visions of the past.
The remake is still alive today in the N 74 Vision Concept, but it never reached production back in the 70s due to the economic climate of South Korea at the time. Now, the concept continues to inspire Hyundai today, with the brand’s latest hydrogen concept getting a body similar to what Hyundai dreamed up back then.
