Isuzu has built a solid reputation for its durable and dependable diesel vehicles over the years. However, with the growing prominence of electrified vehicles in the automotive industry, Isuzu is contemplating its future in the realm of electric mobility.

In response to inquiries from the Australian publication Drive, Isuzu executives acknowledged the possibility of an electric option for the D-MAX in the future. While this does not definitively confirm an impending D-MAX EV, the company stated that it is technically feasible. It should be noted that the development of such a vehicle is not currently underway. Nonetheless, Isuzu expressed that it could leverage the expertise from its electric vehicle division to explore this avenue.

If Isuzu decides to move forward with an electric D-MAX, it could potentially adopt the powertrain system found in the recently introduced N-Series EV light-duty truck. The new-generation N-Series, unveiled in March 2023, offers a range of compact electric powertrain options. Among these options is a variant capable of producing 201 hp and 370 Nm of torque, which aligns with the performance expectations for pickups of similar size.

However, it is worth noting that the current D-MAX diesel models deliver a higher torque output, ranging from 450 Nm to 500 Nm, although they generate 187 hp. The existing Isuzu electric vehicle generates 12 more hp than the diesel counterpart but falls short by 80 Nm in terms of torque. Nevertheless, considering that the same electric powertrain system can propel the much heavier N-Series truck, it may not be a significant downgrade from the diesel variant.

While Isuzu has not initiated development for an electric D-MAX, its competitors are already gearing up for the production of battery-powered pickups. Mitsubishi has confirmed plans to introduce an electric Strada within the next decade, Toyota aims to launch the Hilux BEV by 2026, and even Ford is reportedly exploring the idea of an electric Ranger. To maintain its position as a major player in the pickup market, Isuzu may need to accelerate its efforts to catch up with these developments.
