The next generation of the Mitsubishi Triton/Strada is a topic we’ve covered extensively thanks to Mitsubishi’s drawn-out teaser campaign for its pickup truck. This time, however, we now have all the details of the 2024 Strada as Mitsubishi officially launched it in Bangkok on July 26, 2023. We’re happy to report that along with the launch, all the details we’ve been waiting for are now out in the open. Time to dig in then.

Headlining the sixth generation Strada’s features is its new look, which Mitsubishi proudly proclaims is more than skin deep. The truck now adopts a newly engineered ladder frame for enhanced performance and toughness. Available in double cab, club cab, and single cab body styles, the Strada benefits from a substantial 60 percent increase in torsional rigidity, promising improved overall stability and durability.

Through the use of high-tensile steel, Mitsubishi has successfully reduced the weight of the new Strada when compared to its predecessor, the current Strada we have currently. One notable improvement lies in the redesigned cargo bed, now positioned 45 mm lower at 820 mm, allowing for easier cargo loading. Enhancing practicality, a reinforced frame incorporates a newly added step in the bumper corner. Despite its larger size, Mitsubishi has managed to keep weight gain at a minimum by utilizing lighter steel, ensuring the truck remains a highly utilitarian and efficient vehicle, not just another pavement princess.

Mitsubishi Triton Double Cab Front

During the unveiling, Mitsubishi presented two versions of the Strada: the standard double cab variant and the sporty Athlete edition. Following the previous model’s trend, the Athlete version stands out with its blacked-out accents, in contrast to the standard model’s chrome elements. Visually, the all-new pickup truck bears a striking resemblance to the XRT Concept that made its debut at the recent Bangkok International Motor Show.

Up front, the prominent feature is the expanded grille, accompanied by split headlights and a subtle adaptation of Mitsubishi’s Dynamic Shield design. In the flagship trim, the grille takes on a body-colored appearance with black accents, a departure from the chrome finish. Along the sides, there are more defined sculpted lines above the fenders. At the back, the truck showcases larger LED taillights that extend toward the sides, complementing the truck’s muscular looks.

The interior of the all-new Strada shows a significant improvement in features and quality. The cabin now houses a new analog instrument cluster along with a new digital multi-information display. Adding to the modern amenities is a nine-inch infotainment touchscreen that has connected drive services. Among other interior upgrades are a new steering wheel design and a dual-zone climate control system, ensuring enhanced comfort and convenience for the occupants. In addition, the truck now has an around-view monitor which comes from the Nissan Navara.

Mitsubishi Triton Athlete Engine

Generating the truck’s power is a brand-new 2.4-liter 4N16 four-cylinder turbodiesel engine. The most powerful version of this engine generates an impressive 201 hp and 470 Nm of torque. The mid-grade variants deliver a respectable 181 hp with 430 Nm of torque, while the fleet versions offer 148 hp and 330 Nm of torque. The six-speed automatic transmission from the previous model has been retained, and the 4×4 variants benefit from Mitsubishi’s Super Select 4WD-II system, incorporating an active brake-controlled Limited Slip Differential (LSD) for enhanced off-road capabilities. The addition of the new terrain mode allows drivers to select between various settings, including Normal, Eco, Gravel, Snow, Mud, Sand, and Rock drive modes. The other transmission option available for the Strada is a six-speed manual with a shift-by-wire system and hill-start assist as standard.

Mitsubishi has also given the suspension a thorough upgrade, featuring a fresh double-wishbone front setup and a lighter leaf spring configuration at the rear. Models equipped with the Super Select 4WD-II system, also get Active Yaw Control (AYC) which enhances cornering performance by gently applying the brake to the inside front wheel. Additionally, to facilitate smoother off-road adventures, the Strada now incorporates hill descent and hill start assist systems.

Lastly, in terms of safety, Mitsubishi has equipped the Strada with a suite of advanced features. These include Mitsubishi’s Active Stability and Traction Control (M-ASTC), along with the previously mentioned Hill Descent Control and Hill Start Assist. Furthermore, the truck incorporates ADAS (Advanced Driver Assistance Systems) such as Pedestrian and Cyclist Detection, Rear Cross Traffic Alert, Driver Monitoring System, Adaptive Cruise Control, Traffic Sign Recognition, Front and Rear Automatic Emergency Braking, and Automatic Post Collision Braking, which are just a part of the full suite.
