Aboitiz Power Corporation (AboitizPower) has unveiled its new corporate electric vehicle (EV) fleet transformation initiative, marking the beginning of its commitment to the Electric Vehicle Industry Development Act (EVIDA), also known as Republic Act 11697. The launch event, held at the Blue Leaf Cosmopolitan in Quezon City, introduced the company’s new plug-in EVs, underlining its dedication to promoting eco-friendly and cleaner mobility solutions in the country.

This program stems from the need to diminish the reliance of the local transportation sector on imported fossil fuels. EVIDA mandates that industrial and commercial enterprises allocate at least five percent of their fleets to electric vehicles, aiming to bolster the usage and advancement of EVs.

“As a leader in the energy industry, we want to incorporate innovations that will improve the efficiency and sustainability of our operations. The world is facing developments in climate change, global connectivity, population growth, urbanization, and digitalization, and these changes demand that businesses like ours transform to remain relevant.”

Highlighting the energy consumption patterns in the mobility sector, which accounts for over 31 percent of total final energy consumption and contributes significantly to air pollution and greenhouse gas emissions, AboitizPower emphasizes the pivotal role of electrification in creating a cleaner and more sustainable global energy framework.

AboitizPower’s chosen EVs, produced by Build Your Dreams (BYD), will soon be deployed across key cities served by its distribution utilities: Visayan Electric, Davao Light, and Cotabato Light. These EVs are set to showcase their reliability and efficiency across expansive regions in the Visayas and Mindanao.

AboitizPower Distribution Utilities COO Anton Percides outlines the company’s vision to electrify 30% percent of its four-wheeled vehicles and motorbikes by 2030 and ultimately transition the entire AboitizPower DU fleet to electric by 2040. This EV fleet transformation strategy aligns with the company’s broader goal of introducing 3,700 megawatts of renewable energy, such as solar, wind, and geothermal, into its generation portfolio over the next decade.

Beyond environmental benefits, transitioning to EVs also offers economic advantages. These vehicles demonstrate improved energy efficiency and cost-effectiveness, with per-kilometer travel costs at least 50 percent lower than those of traditional internal combustion engine vehicles.

By electrifying their fleet, AboitizPower aims to reduce carbon emissions, cut operational expenses, and contribute to cleaner urban air quality. This initiative falls in line with the company’s partnership-driven approach, as it boasts the Philippines’ most expansive and diverse renewable energy platform, controlling close to 1,000 megawatts of renewable energy projects, including wind, solar, and geothermal capacities.

In essence, AboitizPower’s corporate EV fleet transformation program stands as a substantial stride towards cleaner energy utilization, in harmony with the Philippines’ drive to reduce reliance on fossil fuels.
