An even more exhilarating and enthusiast-centric variant of the 2024 Subaru WRX is set to make its debut next weekend, bearing the moniker “TR” for the U.S. market.
The TR designation, which stands for “Tuner Ready,” makes its return to the WRX lineup after its last appearance in 2006. At that time, it denoted a special edition with fewer luxury features and a more affordable price, appealing to buyers who intended to enhance the vehicle with aftermarket modifications, hence the name.
However, the upcoming WRX TR may not be as spartan-like as the previous TR. A teaser image released by Subaru hints at potential enhancements, showcasing new, possibly larger alloy wheels and upgraded Brembo brakes with the iconic red calipers

To paint a picture of how bare bones the Impreza WRX TR was, it featured a basic stereo system, a steering wheel without leather wrapping, and standard seats. Oh, and the wing mirrors were unpainted since Subaru thinks that it will eventually be upgraded to aftermarket parts anyway. All the 2006 Impreza WRX TR provided were the absolute basic necessities such as door locks, air-conditioning, cruise control, and power windows and mirrors. Basically the vehicle equivalent of a 24-year-old salaryman’s apartment building.

Will the modern-day TR be as hardcore as its ancestor?

The WRX TR will make its debut on October 7, 2023, with Travis Pastrana and Bucky Lasek heading the unveiling. Aside from the teaser images, Subaru has not disclosed any other information about the WRX TR like the engine and the all-important performance figures.

Here in the Philippines, the WRX is powered by a 2.4-liter turbocharged four-cylinder boxer engine. This engine can provide 271 hp and 350 Nm of torque, which is then paired with either a six-speed manual or a Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT) that propels all four wheels. We don’t know just yet how deep Subaru’s enhancements will be for the TR model, so we’ll just have to wait for October 7 to roll around to see the 2024 WRX TR.
