Toyota has said in the past that a Hilux with a hybrid diesel powertrain is in the works. This mild-hybrid powertrain promises to provide an extra bit of power and fuel efficiency through the use of a 48V hybrid system while retaining the cargo-carrying and towing ability the pure diesel version has. Now, Toyota has revealed the hybrid Hilux which they say will be introduced to the European market in 2024.
First things first, let’s take a look at the engine. Modifications have been made to the 2.8-liter four-cylinder turbodiesel to accommodate the integration of a 48V system. A compact, belt-driven electric motor or generator is responsible for charging a small lithium battery positioned beneath the rear seats that weighs 7.6 kg. Once fully charged, the battery augments the internal combustion engine (ICE) with an additional 16 hp and 65 Nm of torque.
On its own, the 2.8-liter diesel engine produces 201 hp and 500 Nm of torque. Enhancements comprise a new two-arm belt tensioner, a belt built with tougher materials, and an improved stop-start system. Toyota adds that the engine is also adaptable to the non-fossil HVO100 diesel, a fuel made from vegetable oils or waste-based feedstock, for example, cooking oil.
Thanks to the addition of the mild-hybrid system, Toyota says that the Hilux Hybrid demonstrates a five percent improvement in fuel efficiency compared to the standard diesel powertrain. This is attributed in part to an upgraded stop-start system designed to enhance performance in congested stop-and-go traffic. The electric motor enables the engine to stay off for extended periods in extremely slow conditions. Additionally, Toyota optimizes the diesel’s idle speed to as low as 600 rpm for reduced fuel consumption. It’s important to mention that, although the automaker claims a five percent increase in efficiency, specific fuel economy statistics are not currently available.
Toyota says that the 2024 Hilux Hybrid will go on sale in the middle of 2024. As for markets outside of Europe, though, we’ll have to wait for news if Toyota will bring this truck outside of Europe.
