Mercedes-Benz shatters endurance records in the process
Despite its rocky start with electrification, Mercedes-Benz is keen to push the boundaries of performance and endurance of zero-emissions technology.
Their Concept AMG GT XX EV was able to set 25 long-distance records after covering 40,075 kilometers at an average speed of 300 km/h on the legendary Nardò test track in southern Italy.
It wasn’t the first time that Mercedes broke long-distance records in the Nardò test track, as the brand’s experimental C111 prototypes set diesel and petrol records in the 1970s and 80s.
The German automaker was able to achieve the impressive feat in just 7 days, 13 hours, 24 minutes, and 7 seconds, which is the equivalent of driving around the world in eight days. Likewise, among the milestones they were able to get was the longest distance ever covered by an EV in 24 hours.
The AMG GT XX served as a rolling laboratory for technologies set to debut in 2026 under AMG’s dedicated AMG.EA electric platform.
The concept is powered by three axial-flux motors and a direct-cooled high-performance battery, supported by a sophisticated Central Coolant Hub (CCH) that optimizes temperature management across all systems, which allows the EV to deliver sustained maximum performance without de-rating.

Aerodynamics also played a huge role in the record runs. With a drag coefficient of just 0.19 Cd, active aero management, and newly developed 20-inch carbon-clad wheels, the GT XX maintained stability and efficiency at constant triple-digit speeds. Michelin even developed a bespoke Pilot Sport 5 Energy tire for the mission, optimized for high-speed efficiency and durability.
When it comes to charging, Mercedes-AMG worked with charging specialist Alpitronic to develop a prototype station capable of delivering up to 1,000 amps through a CCS cable. The cars charged at an average rate of 850 kW, enabled by a temporary 2.5 MW high-power charging hub built specifically for the test. Thanks to this, pit stops were kept short enough to sustain the week-long high-speed marathon.
Mercedes-AMG also got some help from its Formula 1 expertise, with Mercedes-AMG High Performance Powertrains (HPP) engineers in Brixworth contributing software, cooling, and simulation tools. A Predictive Performance Manager gave real-time driving cues, while an AR racing helmet displayed telemetry directly in the driver’s field of vision. Even Microsoft and Signify pitched in, providing cloud-based telemetry systems and advanced track lighting for around-the-clock operations.
Beyond the records, Mercedes-AMG says the lessons learned at Nardò will directly influence future performance EVs. Michael Schiebe, CEO of Mercedes-AMG GmbH confirmed this, saying, “Many of the technologies from the Concept AMG GT XX will soon make their way into our production vehicles, and our customers will benefit from an entirely new dimension of sustained electric power.”Next Auto News
