This Thursday, Nissan Motor Co., Ltd. and Honda Motor Co., Ltd. announced that the two companies are coming together to conduct joint research on fundamental technologies for next-generation software-defined vehicle (SDV) platforms.

This collaboration follows a memorandum of understanding (MOU) signed on March 15, initiating discussions on a strategic partnership for the era of intelligence and electrification. Additionally, both companies signed another MOU today to further develop the framework of their strategic partnership, which is being explored and considered across a broad scope.

Nissan and Honda are actively discussing and considering collaboration across various fields to accelerate progress towards a carbon-neutral and traffic-accident-free society. Both companies are investing in and advancing research and development in various technologies to promote the adoption and evolution of electric vehicles (EVs), particularly software-defined vehicles (SDVs), within the realms of intelligence and electrification.

At its core, the concept of SDVs introduces upgradeability to vehicles using over-the-air updates. Much like how your phone gets new features with every update, SDVs can obtain additional features and functions with updates. In addition, SDVs are also able to connect with other vehicles and smartphones, integrating vehicle features and information with ease.

Now, while this presents benefits like easier problem diagnosis and vehicle tracking, it may also pose privacy risks with the amount of information going to and from your vehicle, but that’s another topic for another time.

Continuing further, Nissan and Honda also recognize that the software domain, encompassing autonomous driving, connectivity, and AI, will shape the future value and competitiveness of vehicles. This field experiences rapid technological innovation, making it an ideal area for synergistic collaboration by combining the technological expertise and human resources of both companies.
