If you’re into outdoors, the Kona Mauna Loa edition by Hyundai might be your perfect match. Hyundai has revealed a special version of the Kona Electric, called the Kona Mauna Loa. The limited edition will only be sold in Japan, with just 30 units available. Named after the Mauna Loa volcano in Hawaii, it’s made for those who enjoy rugged terrain and outdoor activities.

The Kona Mauna Loa comes with some exterior changes, and now has a “Wild & Tough Black” finish on the bumpers, fender flares, and side skirts, which not only gives it a tougher look but also makes it more resistant to scratches and wear. It’s similar to what you’d find in the Hyundai Ioniq 5 XRT, evoking memories of the unpainted plastic bumpers seen in the ’90s.

The new Kona also has black alloy wheels wrapped in Toyo Open Country A/T tires, which are made for off-road conditions. Hyundai has added mudguards and black accents throughout the exterior, along with a roof crossbar that’s perfect for carrying outdoor gear like camping and hiking equipment. The Kona Mauna Loa comes in only one color: Mirage Green.

Inside, Hyundai has given the Mauna Loa a few special touches to make it more useful for outdoor activities. The light-gray leather seats come with yellow accents, and the interior is equipped with all-weather rubber mats and luggage liners, making cleanup easier after a day out in nature. The special edition also includes accessories like a foldable stool, storage solutions for the seatbacks, and cargo boxes to keep your gear organized in the back.

Under the hood, the Kona Mauna Loa shares the same powertrain as the regular Kona Electric. It comes with a 201-horsepower electric motor that powers the front wheels, paired with a 64.8 kWh battery pack. Although there are no performance upgrades, the standard Kona Electric’s range and capabilities are more than enough for those looking to combine eco-friendly driving with outdoor adventures.

Only 30 units of the Kona Mauna Loa will be sold in Japan, with a price tag of ¥4,950,000  (around P1.8M), making the special edition just a bit more expensive than the regular Kona Lounge model. For those who want a one-of-a-kind, rugged electric SUV, the Kona Mauna Loa is a rare find. While it’s not yet confirmed for the local market, you can browse Hyundai’s current models on AutoDeal and request a quote for the one you like.
