When you think about Ford’s police vehicle fleet, your mind will automatically go to the iconic Crown Victoria Police Interceptor and the much younger but more imposing Police Interceptor Utility based on the Explorer.
These two vehicles allowed Ford to dominate this niche market but these aren’t the sole specialized vehicles Ford offers. In fact, Ford offers a variety of Police-spec vehicles based on its lineup, for example, the F-150 Police Responder, the Transit Prisoner Transport Vehicle, the F-150 Lightning Pro SSV, they even have a hybrid model in the form of the Police Responder Hybrid Sedan based on the Fusion Hybrid.

If you’ve been keeping track of what’s new at Ford, you’ll know that the Blue Oval brand has just unveiled the fifth-generation Expedition SUV. Recently, aligned with the company’s 75th anniversary in the police car business, Ford has introduced the new Expedition SSV. Short for Special Service Vehicle, the SSV is enhanced to handle police, fire, and rescue operations. It comes in two body styles: a standard version and a long-wheelbase variant known as the Max.
The standard has two-row seating while the extended-wheelbase Expedition Max includes a third row featuring a 60/40 power-folding split and power recline. According to Ford, the powered third row is designed to accommodate both personnel and equipment. At the rear, the split tailgate provides flexibility, allowing officers to open just the hatch for quick access to gear or utilize the lower tailgate, which can support up to 226 kilograms.

Inside, the Expedition SSV retains many features from the standard model. Notable among these is a 24.0-inch dashboard display that integrates the digital gauge cluster and infotainment system. The most significant interior modification is the center console, which has been redesigned to create space for radios, computers, and other essential law enforcement equipment.
Every Expedition SSV comes equipped with Ford’s twin-turbocharged 3.5-liter V-6 engine paired with a 10-speed automatic transmission. All SSV models deliver 400 hp and 650 Nm of torque. The police variant also features all-wheel drive as standard.
The Ford Expedition SSV is built purely for law enforcement agencies and won’t be available for purchase by your average Joe. While its commanding presence makes it an impressive sight, it’s probably not something you’d want to spot in your rearview mirror if you’re driving through areas where these vehicles are on duty.
